ARMSROCK is featured in the new issue of Juxtapoz (Sam Flores on cover / see below) that hits stands next week. Gaia and Rachel Lowing lay the groundwork for their installation that will be a part of "From the Streets of Brooklyn" this Jan...

Gaia recently checked in to let us know that he's in the midst of preperation for our upcoming show together this January (and about 40 of his friends) - the epic From The Streets Of Brooklyn.

"My girlfriend (Rachel Lowing) and I are collaborating on a project that will culminate in three installations, the final one concluding in January for a show at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles. The pictures included are from our first piece that was set along the Jones Falls River. We had a little gathering from people at our school before the bridge was washed away with the recent rains.”

The photos above showcase the bridge the two built that lead to the first part of the installation by the Jones Falls River in Baltimore, and the opening night party/bonfire that followed.

The photos below highlight the focal point of the installation, an extremely time-intensive piece that included a shawl made from hand-made, dried fish skin and a portrait from Gaia printed onto standard consumer grade plastic bags. Fish skins, plastic consumer waste... nature, consumption, infinity? An epic and inspiring idea for an install project to say the least and we can't wait to see this all come to fruition this January at our gallery.

Allow Gaia to further explain:
"The Uroboros Project is a collaborative effort between artists Rachel Lowing and Gaia. Spawned from a mutual interest in articulating the inexorably intertwined relationship between people and nature, we examine the act of consumption and its implications on contemporary life. The urban environment is an organism whose growth is dictated by the symbiotic relationship between the city and it's inhabitants. It is the ideology and laws of society manifest, yet simultaneously it obeys basic, natural properties of formation and development that is shared by all sentient creatures.

By considering our connection and correspondence with the city, we come closer to understanding the purgatory between nature and culture that defines our internal struggle as human beings.

The project’s title, Uroboros, is derived from a circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail as an emblem of wholeness, totality, or infinity."

Arrested Motion interview Allison Sommers...

The good folk over at Arrested Motion just posted a nice in-depth interview with VA based artist Allison Sommers...

"When you look at her work, one would suspect that 'detail' could have been Allison Sommer’s middle name. You can’t help but move your head closer and closer to the painting and then shake it in disbelief at how meticulous her brushstrokes are. As a matter of fact, she often paints under a magnifying glass to make sure she gets the desired effect. What is even more amazing is her 'story-telling' does not suffer from this focus on details. Her paintings always seem to be a frozen moment in some epic adventure or strange circumstance that stimulates the viewer’s imagination." - Arrested Motion

ELBOW-TOE debuts his "every-man" on the streets of Brooklyn...

"My current body of work is an allegory about memory's power to hold us back or move us forward. The central character in this parable is a 6 x 10 foot linocut of an Everyman (shown above making his debut on the streets of Brooklyn this past weekend), who has lost it all and wanders the plains with all his belongings strapped to his back. He navigates a world in crisis by learning from his past. The remainder of the characters that he encounters are individuals lost in regret. I have developed these paintings and prints during the American housing and credit crisis of the past year. In contemplating where we are and where we might be, I have found myself looking back at history, remembering the Great Depression, and considering what effects it had on the American psyche. The uncertainty that existed then is present now, and I am addressing the kind of escapism through nostalgia that can occur in the midst of calamity. Every character that the Everyman sees is gripped by this need to escape their present circumstance. They are people lost in a memory at the very point when they should be paying attention to what lies ahead. Many different artists have inspired the flavor of this world including the photography of Walker Evans, the films of the Cohen brothers, the music of Tom Waits and the theatre of Robert Wilson." - ELBOW-TOE

Both artists will be on hand doing an install, street work, and a talk the afternoon following the show (details announced soon).

Plans are in place to have Jet Set Graffiti flim both artists doing a mural somewhere in downtown LA area as well as portions of the install process at our gallery hopefully. If you haven't checked out Jet Set's site, be sure to do so. They just posted a great in the studio report with ELBOW-TOE and have a couple older videos up as well from ARMSROCK and many others, including Ron English and Invader.

This is the 2nd in our sneak peek series leading up to our 'Looking Glass' exhibit taking place during Art Basel this December in Miami at the Gen Art Vanguard Fair (see previous post for full details). We're aiming to have a digital collector preview go out the week of the show (Dec. 4th - Dec. 7th), so please let us know if you'd like to receive that.

PETER TAYLOR profile:

The work of Peter Taylor is all about finding 'balance', both in life and in the creative process. Showing strength in both drawing and collage based work, Taylor's latest series continues to explore themes of joy; and how one needs to find balance in all things to achieve that. I have to say that looking at his work brings on a calming, meditative state of sorts for me.

Taylor comments further on the characters that populate his world, “Sometimes I think they are enlightened and wise, but most of the time I think they have found wisdom to enjoy the present, while celebrating their personal journey. They are therapeutic for me and help me find my own balance.”

In addition to the collage based piece previewed above, Taylor will also be exhibiting five beautifully detailed graphite works on paper that have been nicely custom framed for the fair.

His contributions to the 'Looking Glass' exhibit are the first step in building towards his debut Los Angeles solo show with us during fall 2010.

Taylor has shown all over North America during the past few years, building a loyal following for his Budha inspired work in the process. His work has shown with such respected galleries as BLVD. Gallery (Seattle), Gallery 1988 (Los Angeles/San Francisco), Gallery 16 1/2 (Vancouver) and was also included in the 'Superhero' exhibit curated by Murphy Design at this past summer's ComiCon Convention in San Diego.

YOSUKE UENO profile:
Spending his time between both NYC and Japan, artist Yosuke Ueno is enjoying life currently, fresh off a successful solo show at Mondo Bizarro Gallery (Rome, Italy). We've been big fans of Ueno's work for some time, and we're excited to showcase his new work, including "Alive" (shown above), during Art Basel this December in Miami as part of the Gen Art Vanguard Fair. His contribution to 'Looking Glass' is the first step in building towards a very important solo show we'll be hosting for him summer 2010.

Ueno has shown the world over during the past decade including the Art London and AAF Amersterdam art fairs as well as The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan) and the Shimonoseki Museum (Yamaguchi, Japan) and such esteemed galleries as the aforementioned Mondo Bizarro Gallery (Rome), La Luz De Jesus (Los Angeles), Roq La Rue (Seattle), Jonathan LeVine (New York), Copro/Nason (Santa Monica), 111 Minna (San Francisco), Anno Domini (San Jose) and several others throughout Japan.

Brazilian street artist San invades LA this evening...

Spanish street artist and illustrator San opens his newest showing tonight, Thursday, November 13th from 7-9pm at Upper Playground Los Angeles (125 E. 6th Street, downtown Skid Row LA).

Titled Metamorphosis, San has delivered another set of highly detailed and thought provoking works, and even created a site-specific mural for tonight’s opening that looks really amazing. We own one of his works and can't stress enough how amazing his work is in person, especially his drawings. Be sure to make it out if you have time tonight.

Metamorphosis runs from November 13th, 2008 thru January 3rd, 2009 and some sneak peeks have been posted over here.

ABOUT GEN ART VANGUARD NEW CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR:
Gen Art invites you to the Gen Art Vanguard New Contemporary Art Fair presented by FAGE Total happening alongside this year's Art Basel in Miami. In partnership with Francesco LoCastro, the four-day art fair will take place from December 4-7th and brings together some of the top galleries, artists, and individuals who are helping to define the New Contemporary art movements from Pop Surrealism and New Brow to Urban Contemporary.

If that wasn't enough, Jon Todd will be coming down from Canada and presenting Life Sentence in our project room. His work is amazing and we can't wait to profile a large body of his work. This will be his first major showing in the States and we're super stoked to be hosting it.
