A powerful visual protest will take place in Downtown LA this weekend that will include artists from around the nation whose motive and works will combat the all-too-common abuse of power by America's police forces. The show expresses the voices of a generation of minority and marginalized communities being criminalized by this pathological social dynamic. This issue is not just an isolated problem only happening in a few large cities but is of nationwide epidemic levels. This event hopes to cast attention upon this injustice and advocate for reform.This event is inspired by a recent art exhibition that took place in the San Francisco Bay Area that was in response to the murder of Oscar Grant by the Oakland police. The LA event will include works by many of local political artists along with work from other talents from across the nation, incorporating music, live art, performance art, installations and other mediums.

Movie Time with Beautiful/Decay tonight...

Our friends at Beautiful/Decay are screening art-based films all month long at the new Space 15Twenty, in Los Angeles . This week's installment is artist/director Julian Schnabel's 1996 film Basquiat, about graffiti artist turned neo-expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat rose to prominence in the early 80s, and the film explores his celebrity and star status in the otherwise pretentious New York art scene. The movie introduced us to the talents of Jeffrey Wright and also stars David Bowie, Benicio Del Toro, Dennis Hopper and Courtney Love.

The film is being shown on a large outdoor screen behind the gallery. Seating is limited so get there on time. Check out the trailer below.

Congrats to Camilla on winning the competition! She deserves it, as she's been a whirlwind of activity currently. She's so much going on... here's a lil' recap on things:

Apart from the journal and stationery set she just released via Dark Horse, Camilla also just did a great little webcomic for them - check it out here.

Speaking of Dark Horse, she just did the cover for the MySpace Dark Horse Presents Vol. 3 collected edition as well. Check out the cover for Vol. 2 here.

Camilla is really starting to find a 'home' at Dark Horse, which is awesome. There's more to come from this collaboration, so keep your eyes peeled.

Some may have heard, but she's also working with Grant Morrison. He's finally given everyone the news they've been waiting for - the title of the book Camilla will be drawing! Called, The New Bible, Camilla's sexy take on religion should be interesting to say the very least. More on this awesome collaboration soon.

As of April 2009, street artists & performers are no longer permitted to set up on the sidewalk during the Downtown LA Art Walk without a city issued permit. Therefore, Citizen LA Magazine is offering artists/performers and vendors the opportunity to participate via their Art Park.

The Downtown Art Park is centrally located within the official Downtown Art Walk area. It is within walking distance to all participating galleries and restaurants. The Art Park will act as an information hub; it’s a perfect location to pick up fliers, booklets and all other Art Walk related info.

This event and the Downtown Art Walk are FREE to the public.

Stolen art alert from La Luz De Jesus...

For the 2nd time in less than a year, sometime between 11 am - 1 pm yesterday, Thursday, May 7th - two paintings by Lauren Gardiner were brazenly stolen from La Luz De Jesus gallery in Hollywood. The two paintings were valued at $1750 total & had previously been sold to clients of the gallery. There were only a few customers in the store this morning - none of them carrying bags or wearing loose clothing. It's the store's policy to check all bags at the register, unfortunately, our gallery surveillance failed us & we are currently remiss of any leads.

Thais Beltrame's "When All The Stars Are Gone" tonight @ Carmichael...

'When All The Stars Are Gone' is a poetic glimpse of the world as perceived by Thais Beltrame in her 1st US solo show. Looking to the skies as inspiration, the artist reflects upon solitude, beauty, and the transient nature of being.

“Supposedly all the stars we see today have been dead millions of years,” she muses. “Perhaps this is why human beings feel so alone: we live beneath a sky which no longer exists.” - Thais

In this newest body of work, Thais’ trademark wistful children are changing, growing stronger, wiser, and more aware of their surroundings. From this growth emerge new fears and dilemmas, however, as observed in the artist’s shift from negative space to a brooding application of earthy watercolors. Such depth enhances the delicate innocence that gives Thais’ work its extraordinary power.

Thais Beltrame was born and lives in Sao Paulo. The largely self-taught artist grew up amongst a generation of Brazilian counter-culture in the 80s and 90s. Highly regarded for her subtle, distinctive style, she is the sole female member of the powerhouse Brazilian art collective, the Famiglia Baglione. Thais has exhibited her work in the United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil.
