Crazy 4 Cult this Friday... sneak peeks

The 2nd installment of Crazy 4 Cult hits Gallery 1988 this Friday and we're stoked to bring you sneak peeks from a couple Thinkspace regulars taking part in the show.

Above is Anthony Clarkson's killer take on the Wizard of Oz and below is Camilla d'Errico's Donny Darko inspired piece. Coincidentally enough, Anthony's other piece for the show is also based on Donny Darko. Great minds think alike as they say...

Look for a solo with Clarkson next February in our project room and two person show with Camilla (alongside Caia Koopman) in late summer... can't wait for both shows!

Also look for works from Thinkspace regulars Andrew Hem, Brandi Milne, Cherri Wood, Dave MacDowell, Lesley Reppeteaux, Sarah Joncas and many others when Crazy 4 Cult opens this Friday... be sure to get there early!

BIG show this Wed downtown (last minute head's up)...

Ran into Hacula at this past weekend's super over the top Neckface opening at New Image and he mentioned he was in town for a big show this Wed at some new spot called Small Bills... well, I googled around and found the deal. Seems word is just getting out, and this is going to be an epic show, so wanted to put up a quick post... Small Bills is the new spot put together by LA tastemaker/restauranteur Steven Arroyo (Malo, GOAT, Stork, 750ml). For the grand opening show/party they have put together a very impressive list of artists including Shepard Fairey, “Haculla” Harif Guzman, Bigfoot, Anthony Lister, Chris Pastras, Skullphone, Killpixie, David Browne, and Rick Rodney.

We hear this is a pretty awesome spot - so be sure to check it out if you can.

August 16th art adventure... six openings / one night

Headed out this past Saturday, Aug. 16th to hit up six shows... we made it to five of 'em. Below is a lil' breakdown of the night's adventure...
Started the night off by hitting up Jet Set Grafitti's special event with Ron English for the kickoff of the 'Abraham Obama' tour - Ron had tiled up the alley way next to Jet Set and Studio Number One (see above)...

Ron signed for fans and collectors for well over three hours and they had two great new low-cost prints on hand to purchase and have Ron sign, as well as all his books and recent vinyl figures.

Saber chats with gallery owner Robert Berman out front of the event. Took a second to say hi and then it was off to the next event...

While on the way to Black Maria Gallery, we saw evidence in Echo Park area that Neckface was indeed in town... more on that later.

Arrived to Black Maria Gallery rather early, so the turnout was still pretty mellow, but the works on view from Jennybird Alcantara and Craig LaRotunda were beautiful. Having worked with both in the past, it was nice to see the display of new works. Both were super deep in conversation, so didn't get a chance to say hey (sorry guys, we had five shows still to hit... hope the night went well for you both!)...

Above is Jennybird's showstopper... epic piece with so much detail. Worth the trip alone to see this, she's really getting tight.

After that it was off to LaBrea to hit up Seth's new show at Carmichael Gallery. As you can see above, the front of the space is pretty intense right now as a couple weeks back they hosted the opening for Amana Lynn's new show... but we were there to take in their new show in the back gallery "You've Been Wasting Your Time" with Other, Hush and Flip. Most of Other's works were lost in the mail, which was a huge crusher to hear, as we were so looking forward to seeing his new large works, but he did have a nice selection of smaller works that didn't get lost in the mail on view in their office area... Hush made it into town and did a nice series of new works (his wall of works is below).

Close up of one of Other's new smaller works below... love the detail and insanity in each... he's touched to say the least, and I mean that in the best way possible. He's always out with Labrona, and given how much Labrona has taken off in recent months, Other is one you should have your eye on.

After taking in the new works of Other, it was time to head over a couple blocks to catch the insanity that would be Neckface's new show at New Image Art Gallery over on Fairfax... as you can see below, this was one of their biggest openings in some time... the crowd spilled out of the front and filled up the entire block almost.

The new works were just amazing, with a killer crazed clown theme running throughout each.

The whole spot was painted up in this twisted red and black triangle them that really set the new works off and added to the overall crazy vibe... which was all caped off with a full on skate demo going off in the back of the gallery (see pics below). You had to be there, but that was so over the top and confined, sweaty, loud and just plain nuts - who'd have ever thought inside that lil' space you'd get to see a full on skate demo taking place in a caged in arena!!!

Inside 'the cage' it looked like a rundown skate park from the bad side o' town complete with all sorts of craziness scrawled on the walls by Neckface and his pals.

The view upon entry... totally packed and hot as hell... see the skate cage in the back?!?!

Nasty Neckface makes a rare appearance (see above)... in his hand, the cherised green wristband to the after party over at the bar adjacent to Cantor's... yeah, the deli. Crazy huh? Who'd have thought you'd choose that place for an afterparty... sadly, I got a wristband, but there was no way I was going to be making it over there at midnight to hang with that batch of lunatics... I'm sure someone ended up in jail that night.

After that insanity, it was time to head over to Culver City to take in the last two shows of our planned adventure, sadly we missed the Lab 101's opening, but arrived to see Project: going off (see above)... nice turnout for the FUN crew...

Rising Star Tessar Lo gets busy in our sketchbook...

The work from the Friends United Network crew was really cool to take in, complete with a huge tree suspended from the ceiling that had it's 'shadow' painted on the gallery floor - looked super cool.

Highlight of the show were the two new works from Portland based artist Timothy Karpinski (see above and below). His delicate and whimsical works of life as we know it are just so beautiful. Look for his show with us this November in our project room during Audrey's 'Drawing Show'... Timothy's also on the books for a full solo in our main gallery next year, so be sure to check out his work when you can further over at http://www.timothykarpisnki.com/

Ended the evening off by having Yoskay Yamamoto throw a lil' something in sketchbook #7... as he was drawing away, found out about his upcoming UK solo show at O Contemporary... HUGE for Yoskay - congrats bro!!!

Rolled into the homestead about 1130PM... a great night of art was had and we're already looking forward to this week's shows including the big opening of Small Bills and the huge Crazy 4 Cult 2 this Friday at Gallery 1988... not to mention next weekend is the big 8th Anniversary of Cannibal Flower, so August continues to deliver the goods in a big way (and this during a month that is usually the 'off season' for the art world). Gotta love LA!

An interview with Stella Im Hultberg...

AN INTERVIEW WITH STELLA IM HULTBERG:

1) Please give us a lil’ background info on yourself. Where were you born and raised?
i was born in seoul, south korea, moved around to hong kong, back to seoul, to taiwan, then to california for college. i'm totally what they call a "third culture kid". it definitely gave me the grounds for having fascination for identities, to add to the confusion, in those chinese culture countries, i went to british and american schools.

2) If I came to your area, what would we do / where would you take me?
there's so much to do in brooklyn, or NYC in general. i normally take any visitors to eat inexpensive good food that i know of. there are a lot of music venues and galleries in brooklyn (bushwick area) as well.

3) Did you go to college / art school? If so, what are your thoughts on art school in general?
i went to cal state for industrial design, which is completely different than an art school. it was much more of a practical, vocational, technical training of designers than a pool of academic creativity and imagination.

as for art schools, i think it's beneficial for any artists to take fundamental classes, and after you have those technical skills, you can probably take yourself anywhere from that. having said that, i do need to probably go take some classes, since i'm mostly self taught and possibly bad-habit-ridden.

4) What’s your earliest memory involving art or creating art?
i remember being very little, possibly before i could draw or hold a pencil right. i started speaking a little too early for my own good (or my mom's), and i kept asking my mom to
draw all these things for me. probably the earliest.

in school, as young kids (kindergarten to 2nd, 3rd grade) in korea we were required to keep a drawing journal. i drew in it everyday, writing one line or two of what happened that day.

5) When are you most productive / when do you normally work on art?
i oscillate between being a night owl and an early bird. it's either paint all night and sleep all day - or wake up at 4am and get to work.

6) Tell us something about yourself that someone would never guess in their wildest dreams.
i'm really not sure that i'd possess any quality that is that shocking, but maybe the closest thing i can think of is that i'm pretty handy due to my industrial design background. in the past, i've had to weld metal, build furniture, mold plastic, and maneuver all the shop machines like table saws, routers, miters, etc. i guess it's useful to know how products are built, because i can fix them when they're broken. i could also say that i know a few languages, but is that that wild?

7) Are you reading anything right now?
i'm finishing murakami haruki's "after dark", his latest novel - my favorite novelist. no matter what book i read, i always randomly open up joseph campbell's "power of myth" and read whatever is on the page - it's the most inspiring book of all time, so much so that we gift it to friends and family all the time.

8) What’s your favorite color and why?
i have too many favorites, for different contexts. it seems that , in general, i like blue hues.

9) Do you listen to music while painting/drawing? If so, do you have a current favorite that inspires?
i tend to title my paintings after songs (titles or lyrics) that feels like are on the same wavelength to me. for my last round of paintings (for Raveled), i listened to a lot of the pixies, blonde redhead, peter, bjorn, and john, coltrane, pink floyd. all time favorites are the beatles, zeppelin, dylan, neil young, the zombies and hendrix.

although to be honest, i'm not as auditory as i'm visual, so these are mostly influenced by my husband, matthew, and most of my inspiration comes from books (like joseph campbell's books) or film.

10) If you had to explain your work to a stranger, how would you do it?
i've had to do this, and it never works. i'd just give them my website link, or show them pictures on my ipod.

11) Favorite artist (living or dead) and what makes them special to you?
i went to see egon schiele exhibit at the neue gallerie here in nyc a few years ago, and it really blew me away to see them in person, and fueled me to start creating. his paintings and drawings are amazing overall, and when you zoom into a square inch of his works, they're still amazing and interesting - like a mini abstract painting, and just the sheer amount of work he's left behind in his short life and from what little he had is astounding.

but really, there are too many to list all the artists that inspire me, and i admire each of them for different reasons.

12) What have you got coming up in terms of shows and projects?
i have a couple group shows for this year, one of which will be a collaboration with a friend. so that will be exciting. the next couple years are a string of solo shows, which kind of scares me a little. it would be nice to kind of take a break for a bit after them.

13) What are you doing right after this interview?
i might have to go purge myself first of all this self-indulgence. then i will probably go read a book, "after dark" and sketch maybe.

Sorry to those that were our friends and contacts on Facebook... we've had our account taken down or 'disabled' as they like to say. Seems we've suffered the same fate as the nice folks over at WoosterCollective.com, as we registered as a single person, and they seem to feel Thinkspace should have been registered as a 'group' or a 'page', so instead of a nice head's up mail or such, asking us to update our overall profile info, they've simply taken down all we've built there.

We may relaunch something there in the near future, but this has left a rather sour taste in my mouth, no pun intended.

"Driven by her recent trip to her native Korea and Japan, Stella’s new work explores the darker side of being. Several of her new pieces are stunning and arresting – beautiful in a haunting manner. In addition to her new work, she’s in the process of creating an elegant front room install. Also opening on Friday in Thinkspace’s Project Room are Dennis Hayes IV’s Against the Grain and Allison Sommers’s Waterways. At first glance, Dennis’s work comes across as pacific abstract scenes combining finely rendered birds and circles awash in color. Down a layer, each of his paintings reflects a comment on society which each type of bird representing a social role or class. Delving deeper, Dennis explained that his recent work incorporates elements of Sacred Geometry – nearly every color, shape and symbol works to build the commentary. Each painting is consciously created out of recycled and “found” objects. Each of the boards he paints on is in reality constructed of numerous wood squares cut from discarded wood and the paint he use has been rescued from dumpsters. Finally, Allison Sommers’s new body of fantastic aquatic-minded work is a joy to see. Each piece is packed with colorful detail blurring the lines between the whimsical and the gritty. These can really only be truly appreciated up close."

One amazing opening awaits this Friday...

Stella Im Hultberg is going to rock the house with her 1st LA solo and the works are just next level. We're so proud of how far she's come and how she continues to set goals for herself and is always striving to grow. She will be exhibiting 15 brand new works - 9 oil works on canvas and 6 mixed media works on tea-stained paper, all of which are beautifully framed in matching frames making for her strongest collection of works to date.

We'll also be posting some sneak peeks from Dennis Hayes IV in the coming days, as well as Allison Sommers, both of which will be on view in our project room/gallery II. Wait to yhou see Hayes' new pieces, this show is going to get folks talking in a big way. Both have really raised the bar and it makes for a very strong overall show from front to back. We can't wait to share it with you all, so don't miss the opening this Friday, August 8th from 7-11PM (and know we'll probably be rolling 'till at least midnight, so please keep that in mind).

Tony Philippou continues to amaze...

Bronx, NY artist Tony Philippou continues to push his oil works to new levels with a new series of four works that will be in this weekend's The Hive show. His 'halo' series depicting real life representations of Judas and Jesus in modern times are starting to really garner a strong collector base. Be sure to keep an eye on him... and watch out for a full show with us in our project room next fall.

Excited to say we're beginning to work with Robert Pokorny. He'll be returning to school this September to get his masters in fine art, and we want to wish him the best with that important next step in his career.
