Stella Im Hultberg interview over at AM + show tonight at Limited Addiction...

There's a great lil' short interview with Stella Im Hultberg done by the fine folks over at Arrested Motion posted here.

She's taking part in the swan song show out at Limited Addiction Gallery in Denver tonight - soon to be the David B. Smith Gallery. David's got some great show's lined up for next year, so be sure to keep an eye on them.

Look for Stella's return to Thinkspace next July... until then, she'll be gearing up for her debut solo with Seattle's Roq La Rue coming up in February.

A visit to the home of Aaron Rose...

The good folks over at TheSelby.com just posted an amazing visit to the home of the one and only Aaron Rose. The man responsible for the 'Beautiful Losers' travelling exhibit, the man who ran the infamous Alleged Gallery (1992-2002) in NYC (and in Japan for a short stint) and oh so much more... google him if you're not familiar. A true icon of our scene if there ever was one.

For a lil' more on the history of Alleged Gallery, check out this short overview: http://www.stranger-mag.com/features/life/aaron-rose-alleged-gallery-1992-2002.html

Amy Crehore in the studio getting ready for 'Dreamgirls & Ukes' coming up this February...

Amy Crehore recently checked in with us:
My solo exhibit at Thinkspace (February 13-March 6, 2009) is entitled Dreamgirls and Ukes. In this show, I will feature a new series of oil paintings of playful, iconic nudes and introduce some new characters (in addition to my cats, pierrots and monkeys): a lion, a tortoise, and large flying insects. Ukuleles will play a role in these narratives, giving the works musical ambience. Some of these dream sequences will take place in nature, others in curtained rooms.

I am also painting over a dozen antique ukuleles as part of this exhibit. Most of these instruments are from the American ukulele boom of the 1920’s. I have personally hand-picked a collection that represents a variety of styles and designs including banjo ukes, mahogany and koa ukes, as well as art deco novelty ukes. On these ukes, I will incorporate motifs from my paintings, plus I’ll be adding creative type and logo design. My long-time music partner, Lou Reimuller, is also a luthier and he has lovingly restored each of these instruments. These ukes are all “players” as well as fine art objects.

In addition, my band, The Hokum Scorchers (duo), will be giving a rare musical performance on opening night of blues, rags and jugband songs from the 20’s and 30’s. We have performed in the past at the Seattle Folk Festival, Bumbershoot and other northwest venues. We started the “Tickler” fine art ukulele company in 2007 (hand-built ukes) and the vintage ukuleles in this show will be called “Tickleroos”.

Background info:
Amy Crehore was born in the mountains of Virginia. She spent her childhood in the suburbs of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but returned to Virginia to earn her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University where she studied filmmaking, animation, photography and design. After college, she began to teach herself to paint with oils while earning a living as a graphic artist. It wasn’t long before her paintings were included in prestigious shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Portland Art Museum. Playboy and Esquire took notice of her talents in 1991 and commissioned her for magazine spreads. Her double portrait of Jewel and Alanis Morrisette is included in Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits (Chronicle Books, 2000).

In 2005, Amy Crehore made a splash with her playfully surreal, yet sensual, “Monkey Love” paintings at the first of two “Blab!” art shows in Santa Monica, CA. The following year, she debuted her “Blues Gal” series in the second “Blab!” show and exhibited some of her award-winning “Little Pierrot” paintings at Applegate Gallery, also located in Santa Monica.

Amy has been booked up ever since, showing her work at Roq La Rue (Seattle), M Modern Gallery (Palm Springs & Las Vegas), Corey Helford Gallery (Culver City), Robert Berman Gallery (Santa Monica), Copro/Nason (Santa Monica), Ad Hoc Art (NY), and Mark Murphy’s 'Know' exhibit at Art Basel in Miami as well as this past summer's 'Green' exhibit that took place at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica

Amy Crehore has lived on the west coast in Eugene, OR for the past 20 years.

MOCA issues special Ryden silkscreen print...

MOCA Projects Council recently released a limited-edition silkscreen print entitled "Silence" from Mark Ryden.

Produced especially for MOCA, this wonderful artwork is a near perfect reproduction of an original Ryden painting. Meticulously crafted, printed on finely handmade paper from Bhutan, and carefully dyed and aged, the work is completed by two embossings created in the final process—a beautifully hand-sculpted bee and the printer’s chops into the corners.

"Silence" (2008) measures 28 x 22 inches and has been framed to the artist’s specifications. A signed and numbered edition of 50 with 10 Artist proofs. MOCA is down to the last twenty of these and they are priced at $6,000 (not including sales tax or out-of-state shipping). All proceeds benefit MOCA. If interested, drop 'em a call at 213-633-5318.

Allison Sommers continues to experiment with sculpture... and we think she's nailed it...

Allison Sommers
PB & Justine Go For Walkies
Paperclay, gouache, glass beads, string, feathers, & cicada nymph skin
Roughly 5" tall

"Every morning, right around nine, you'll see him in his monogrammed jacket, walking that dreadful pet of his... he always mumbles forgotten songs to himself to drown out her incessant noise..."

Allison has experimented with sculptural representations of her characters before, but now that's she's taken to actually carving and sculpting the paper clay, we think she's really found her medium and can't wait for her world to further take 3D form. It's really going to be magical to watch her grow over the coming years and we're so honored to be working with her.

She's currently in the midst of getting all ready for her debut solo show this May in our project room. Much will be revealed, worlds expanded and further explored, so much to look forward to.

'Looking Glass' sneak peek #3 - Damon Soule

This is the 3rd in our 'sneak peek' series leading up to our 'Looking Glass' exhibit taking place during Art Basel from December 4th - December 7th in Miami at the Gen Art Vanguard Fair (see previous post for full details).

Look for a series of 'sneak peeks' to be posted over the next two weeks as we head into the final stretch and be sure to watch Arrested Motion for live blogging from Miami during Art Basel / Gen Art Vanguard and also be sure to check out AM's first batch of exclusive preview photos that we supplied them from 'Looking Glass' here.

DAMON SOULE profile:
Damon Soule’s work challenges many of the myths perpetuated by the scientific establishment. Drawing inspiration from the world of alternative sciences, Soule uses fractal patterns and intricate designs along with a carefully chosen color pallet to help further explore the scientific universe.

You can check out a cool interview with Soule over at Fecal Face here. The interview also features images from many of the works from his recent solo show in NYC at Joshua Liner Gallery.

In addition to the above interview, be sure to check out a great video that the folks over at Joshua Liner Gallery put together to help promote his recent solo here.

Over the past decade his work has shown the world over with such respected galleries as Joshua Liner Gallery (NYC), Lineage Gallery (Philadelphia), White Walls (San Francisco), BLVD. Gallery (Seattle), Intoxicated Demons Gallery (Berlin), 111 Minna Gallery (San Francisco), Robert Berman Gallery (Santa Monica), and numerous others.

Soule's contributions to the 'Looking Glass' exhibit are the first step in building towards his debut Los Angeles solo show with us during the spring of 2010.

Gaia and Rachel Lowing lay the groundwork for their installation that will be a part of "From the Streets of Brooklyn" this Jan...

Gaia recently checked in to let us know that he's in the midst of preperation for our upcoming show together this January (and about 40 of his friends) - the epic From The Streets Of Brooklyn.

"My girlfriend (Rachel Lowing) and I are collaborating on a project that will culminate in three installations, the final one concluding in January for a show at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles. The pictures included are from our first piece that was set along the Jones Falls River. We had a little gathering from people at our school before the bridge was washed away with the recent rains.”

The photos above showcase the bridge the two built that lead to the first part of the installation by the Jones Falls River in Baltimore, and the opening night party/bonfire that followed.

The photos below highlight the focal point of the installation, an extremely time-intensive piece that included a shawl made from hand-made, dried fish skin and a portrait from Gaia printed onto standard consumer grade plastic bags. Fish skins, plastic consumer waste... nature, consumption, infinity? An epic and inspiring idea for an install project to say the least and we can't wait to see this all come to fruition this January at our gallery.

Allow Gaia to further explain:
"The Uroboros Project
is a collaborative effort between artists Rachel Lowing and Gaia. Spawned from a mutual interest in articulating the inexorably intertwined relationship between people and nature, we examine the act of consumption and its implications on contemporary life. The urban environment is an organism whose growth is dictated by the symbiotic relationship between the city and it's inhabitants. It is the ideology and laws of society manifest, yet simultaneously it obeys basic, natural properties of formation and development that is shared by all sentient creatures.

By considering our connection and correspondence with the city, we come closer to understanding the purgatory between nature and culture that defines our internal struggle as human beings.

The project’s title, Uroboros, is derived from a circular symbol depicting a snake, or less commonly a dragon, swallowing its tail as an emblem of wholeness, totality, or infinity."
Learn more about The Uroboros Project at: http://uroborosproject.blogspot.com/

And keep an eye on Gaia here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gaiastreetart/

Arrested Motion interview Allison Sommers...

The good folk over at Arrested Motion just posted a nice in-depth interview with VA based artist Allison Sommers...

"When you look at her work, one would suspect that 'detail' could have been Allison Sommer’s middle name. You can’t help but move your head closer and closer to the painting and then shake it in disbelief at how meticulous her brushstrokes are. As a matter of fact, she often paints under a magnifying glass to make sure she gets the desired effect. What is even more amazing is her 'story-telling' does not suffer from this focus on details. Her paintings always seem to be a frozen moment in some epic adventure or strange circumstance that stimulates the viewer’s imagination." - Arrested Motion

ELBOW-TOE debuts his "every-man" on the streets of Brooklyn...

"My current body of work is an allegory about memory's power to hold us back or move us forward. The central character in this parable is a 6 x 10 foot linocut of an Everyman (shown above making his debut on the streets of Brooklyn this past weekend), who has lost it all and wanders the plains with all his belongings strapped to his back. He navigates a world in crisis by learning from his past. The remainder of the characters that he encounters are individuals lost in regret. I have developed these paintings and prints during the American housing and credit crisis of the past year. In contemplating where we are and where we might be, I have found myself looking back at history, remembering the Great Depression, and considering what effects it had on the American psyche. The uncertainty that existed then is present now, and I am addressing the kind of escapism through nostalgia that can occur in the midst of calamity. Every character that the Everyman sees is gripped by this need to escape their present circumstance. They are people lost in a memory at the very point when they should be paying attention to what lies ahead. Many different artists have inspired the flavor of this world including the photography of Walker Evans, the films of the Cohen brothers, the music of Tom Waits and the theatre of Robert Wilson." - ELBOW-TOE

Peep the 'sneak peek' via the link below for more from ELBOW-TOE. Many new shots have been uploaded and more still to be loaded as we near the opening of Mostly Memory:

'Looking Glass' sneak peek #2 - Peter Taylor

Peter Taylor
Untitled
Acrylic, cut paper, HB pencil, cut out silk screened images on paper mounted to wood panel
12"x12"

This is the 2nd in our sneak peek series leading up to our 'Looking Glass' exhibit taking place during Art Basel this December in Miami at the Gen Art Vanguard Fair (see previous post for full details). We're aiming to have a digital collector preview go out the week of the show (Dec. 4th - Dec. 7th), so please let us know if you'd like to receive that.

Look for additional 'sneak peeks' to be posted in the coming weeks and be sure to watch Arrested Motion for live blogging from Miami during Art Basel / Gen Art Vanguard.

PETER TAYLOR profile:
The work of Peter Taylor is all about finding 'balance', both in life and in the creative process. Showing strength in both drawing and collage based work, Taylor's latest series continues to explore themes of joy; and how one needs to find balance in all things to achieve that. I have to say that looking at his work brings on a calming, meditative state of sorts for me.

Taylor comments further on the characters that populate his world, “Sometimes I think they are enlightened and wise, but most of the time I think they have found wisdom to enjoy the present, while celebrating their personal journey. They are therapeutic for me and help me find my own balance.”

In addition to the collage based piece previewed above, Taylor will also be exhibiting five beautifully detailed graphite works on paper that have been nicely custom framed for the fair.

His contributions to the 'Looking Glass' exhibit are the first step in building towards his debut Los Angeles solo show with us during fall 2010.

Taylor has shown all over North America during the past few years, building a loyal following for his Budha inspired work in the process. His work has shown with such respected galleries as BLVD. Gallery (Seattle), Gallery 1988 (Los Angeles/San Francisco), Gallery 16 1/2 (Vancouver) and was also included in the 'Superhero' exhibit curated by Murphy Design at this past summer's ComiCon Convention in San Diego.

'Looking Glass' sneak peek #1 - Yosuke Ueno

Yosuke Ueno
"Alive"
15.7" x 15.7"
39.9 cm x 39.9 cm
Acrylic / mixed media on canvas

Over the coming weeks we'll be posting a series of sneak peeks from our upcoming 'Looking Glass' exhibit taking place during Art Basel this December in Miami at the Gen Art Vanguard Fair (see previous post for full details). Along with the sneak peeks we'll be posting brief artist profiles along with links to more info on each. We're aiming to have a digital collector preview go out the week of the show (Dec. 4th - Dec. 7th), so please let us know if you'd like to receive that.

Look for more 'sneak peeks / artist profiles' to be posted soon and also watch Arrested Motion for add'l sneak peeks and live blogging from Miami.

YOSUKE UENO profile:
Spending his time between both NYC and Japan, artist Yosuke Ueno is enjoying life currently, fresh off a successful solo show at Mondo Bizarro Gallery (Rome, Italy). We've been big fans of Ueno's work for some time, and we're excited to showcase his new work, including "Alive" (shown above), during Art Basel this December in Miami as part of the Gen Art Vanguard Fair. His contribution to 'Looking Glass' is the first step in building towards a very important solo show we'll be hosting for him summer 2010.

Ueno has shown the world over during the past decade including the Art London and AAF Amersterdam art fairs as well as The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan) and the Shimonoseki Museum (Yamaguchi, Japan) and such esteemed galleries as the aforementioned Mondo Bizarro Gallery (Rome), La Luz De Jesus (Los Angeles), Roq La Rue (Seattle), Jonathan LeVine (New York), Copro/Nason (Santa Monica), 111 Minna (San Francisco), Anno Domini (San Jose) and several others throughout Japan.

"When I paint, I am making much of one thing. That is a feeling to try things that I wouldn't handle with my mind. An adventurer makes his way without fully getting what lies ahead. A chemist never succeeds without experimentation. An artist should obey one's flexible brain cells. Whenever I face up to work, I get going from a step where I can't even imagine the outcome, and try to seek a fresh, beautiful ground." - Yosuke Ueno

Brazilian street artist San invades LA this evening...

Spanish street artist and illustrator San opens his newest showing tonight, Thursday, November 13th from 7-9pm at Upper Playground Los Angeles (125 E. 6th Street, downtown Skid Row LA).

Titled Metamorphosis, San has delivered another set of highly detailed and thought provoking works, and even created a site-specific mural for tonight’s opening that looks really amazing. We own one of his works and can't stress enough how amazing his work is in person, especially his drawings. Be sure to make it out if you have time tonight.

Metamorphosis runs from November 13th, 2008 thru January 3rd, 2009 and some sneak peeks have been posted over here.

Full 'Recommended Listings' post/e-mail still to come later this evening... a TON of shows to enjoy this weekend in LA (yeah, again... we've got it tough).

ABOUT GEN ART VANGUARD NEW CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR:
Gen Art invites you to the Gen Art Vanguard New Contemporary Art Fair presented by FAGE Total happening alongside this year's Art Basel in Miami. In partnership with Francesco LoCastro, the four-day art fair will take place from December 4-7th and brings together some of the top galleries, artists, and individuals who are helping to define the New Contemporary art movements from Pop Surrealism and New Brow to Urban Contemporary.

Building on the highly successful 2007 Vanguard Exhibition at Art Basel Miami, the goal of the fair is to advance the dialogue about these emerging contemporary art movements and their cultural context. Vanguard Art Fair takes place in the stunning Charcoal Studios where guests will enjoy gallery booths, media lounge, specialty cocktails daily from 4pm-6pm and other special programming to be announced shortly.

On Friday, December 5th, from 8pm-midnight the exhibition will be additionally highlighted through the Official Vanguard Opening Party featuring interactive installations, performance artists, music and more!

Gen Art Vanguard is a New Contemporary Art Fair founded by Gen Art to provide a fine art exhibition platform for emerging artists and to give leading contemporary art galleries access to an international network of collectors. As the first annual art fair of its kind, Vanguard represents a new forum, committed to advocating the historical significance of New Contemporary, while showcasing cutting edge talent that is mastering the amalgamation of Fine Art and mainstream culture. The goal of the art fair is to further advance the dialogue of new contemporary art movements, from their cultural roots to their current influence.

The ultimate Ekundayo collector...

The Hundreds recently went over to the home of Linkin Park's Joe Hahn to check out his collection and posted up a sweet lil' spread of pics. Joe has been a big supporter of our gallery and the artists we work with since day one and has more original works from Ekundayo than anyone else... including the above beauty from his 2007 solo show with us.

Check out the full feature here: http://www.thehundreds.com/wordpress/?p=7557

And check out Ekundayo's work in one of Linkin Park's latest videos here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1PCW0C1aiM

ARMSROCK continues to kill it...

ARMSROCK is getting busy over in Germany (studio shot above)...

Peep the 'sneak peek' via the link below - many new shots uploaded and more as we get closer to the opening of Mostly Memory:

Mostly Memory
ARMSROCK & ELBOW-TOE
Opening Reception: Fri, Dec. 12th 7-11PM

Both artists will be on hand doing an install, street work, and a possible talk the afternoon following the show, complete with a book-signing from ARMSROCK... more on that soon.

If that wasn't enough, Jon Todd will be coming down from Canada and presenting Life Sentence in our project room. His work is amazing and we can't wait to profile a large body of his work. This will be his first major showing in the States and we're super stoked to be hosting it.

Juxtapoz.com is already heating up the show as well, check the links below:

So excited for this, get ready everyone!!!

"The Drawing Room" opening night... / prints sold out...

Thank you to all that came out and made last night such a huge success for Audrey and all in 'The Drawing Room'. It was awesome to have 11 of the 24 featured artists and Audrey herself in the house for the opening, as well as Robert Pokorny and Timothy Karpinski (both of whom were showing in our project room).

Audrey sold out before the doors opened (as did many in her curated group show) and once the doors did open, her two special limited edition giclee prints that were created for the exhibition quickly followed suit and were sold out by 10PM - 400 prints in 4 hours, it was a whirlwind in our office to say the least. We've already seen some up on eBay, really saddens Audrey when this happens... You think people could come up with a better way to make money than flipping limited edition prints and toys. Pathetic low lifes.

We'll be posting a slew of opening night shots later tonight, but our good friends over at Arrested Motion have already posted up a nice set (including the shot taken above) - check out the following link for many more shots from the opening night: http://arrestedmotion.com/2008/11/openings-the-drawing-room-thinkspace/#more-3623

The line to view the works and purchase prints went around the block all night long. What a night!!! The LA art world was out in force as well with many big names rolling through to check out the show and pay their respects to Audrey.

There are still some amazing pieces on hand from those Audrey curated, so be sure to check our site. She really did an amazing job curating this show and all that attended seemed to really enjoy the works on view. Look for more soon...

'Drawing Room' preview link now live / love from BoingBoing.net...

'The Drawing Room' links are now ready and live. Please know Audrey spent a lot of time and love putting this lineup together and we want to be sure all also take the time to look over her curation, as you can be sure many gallery owners will be and it's a sure thing you'll be seeing much more from many of the newer names included in the exhibit.

Digital preview for 'The Drawing Room' curated by Audrey Kawasaki: http://www.sourharvest.com/thinkspace/2008/drawingroom/w0rKs4u.php

The links are also now live for our two shows taking place this month in our project room:
'The Place I Call Home' digital preview for Timothy Karpinski: http://www.sourharvest.com/thinkspace/2008/project/placehome/works.php

'New works from Robert Pokorny' digital preview: http://www.sourharvest.com/thinkspace/2008/project/pokorny/works.php

The highly influential BoingBoing.net just posted some love on the show too, check it here:

Also, please note our 2009 exhibition schedule is now posted on our site and wait lists are quickly developing for many of the shows. If you haven’t yet, please be sure to sign up for our mailing list on the homepage of our website at http://www.thinkspacegallery.com/ to receive regular updates on all our happenings. If you see a show listed in our ‘Upcoming Exhibitions’ section on our website, please reach out asap.

Audrey Kawasaki's new prints for "The Drawing Room"...

'Uria'
Giclee print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag fine art archival paper
Hand-signed & numbered by the artist
Limited Edition of 200
9"x12"
SOLD OUT
Limit one per patron

We will open early at 6PM for "The Drawing Room" reception this Fri, Nov. 7th to help with the flow of print sales.

There will be NO phone orders and NO internet orders. This is all as Audrey has requested, as she wants these prints to be special for patrons attending opening night/weekend.

With 200 of each, we should have plenty to last throughout the night, so I don't think there's any need for anyone to go lining up on Friday... but if you do, it's all good, doors will open at 6PM.

Please know we'll be doing our best to police these going up on ebay too - so please don't come with the notion of simply going home and uploading to the web, as that's just lame.

The prints came out beautiful, as did the show, can't wait for all to see this one in person.

Check out more shots of the show coming together here:
