STILL ON VIEW / DON’T MISS:
Laguna Art Museum
307 Cliff Drive in Laguna Beach / 949.494.8971 (contact for hours & admission info)
“In The Land Of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor” is an exhibition that presents the work of 150 artists and posits that there has been a huge, but unacknowledged art movement taking place in this country for the last 40 years. Since 1994, this ground swelling of lowbrow, surrealistic, pop, figurative, narrative work has coalesced and found a voice in the pages of Juxtapoz magazine published in San Francisco. This rag has become the most widely read art magazine in the US. It is an influencing force on the aspiring artists of Generation Y and the Millenials, who are now enrolling in art schools in numbers never seen before.
(On view through October 5th – do NOT miss this important show!!!)

Please know this is by no means a complete listing of all the art happenings in LA, nor do we try to attempt to be that, as there are great sources like the LA Weekly and many others for that. We strive to direct you towards exhibits that we plan to check out ourselves. Most shows we suggest fall within the realm commonly referred to as new contemporary, urban contemporary, lowbrow, pop surrealism, outsider, graffiti, etc. Enjoy!

Sign up on the right hand side of our blog to get this listing mailed to you on a weekly basis.

Juxtapoz.com post preview on Joshua Clay...

Juxtapoz.com have posted a nice lil' preview write up on our upcoming shows this July with Joshua Clay (see above) as well as Erik Siador & Jose "Emroca" Flores in our project room. Click the below link to view their write up:

Armsrock pics from Thieves Ladder / new videos & more...

Armsrock just finished up back to back shows in NY and the UK and went over extremely well at both shows. He's definitely gaining momentum and blowing minds with his amazing installations. To view a set of works from the current 'Poets Of The Paste' show at Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn, NY - click here: http://www.adhocart.org/index.php?option=com_rsgallery2&Itemid=70&gid=62

To view a beautiful set of shots from the recent "Thieve's Ladder" show at Black Rat Press in the UK with Poncho and Chris Stain click on the below link thanks to the fine folks over at WallKandy.net:

As if all that action wasn't enough, the fine folks over at Jet Set Graffiti recently visited his studio as he was preparing for the above shows and posted two really nice mini-movies on their visit. I'm sure some of you have seen these by now, but I still wanted to include them in this post, as they are worthy of another viewing. For more on Jet Set, check out: http://www.jetsetgraffiti.com/

Studio visit #2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu2Hrfm5zzk&feature=related

The same folks just interviewed Elbow-Toe as he prepares for both his upcoming solo with Black Rat Press in the UK and his 2-person show with Armsrock with us this December. Soon as that's ready and posted, we'll be sure to post mention of it here. Can't wait to check that out. They've also posted some nice stuff on C215 just now, so be sure to check out their site and bookmark it.

In meantime, watch what else Armsrock gets up to via his blog here:

Great article on the Tate Modern show...

Check out this great article on the big Tate Modern show:

In The Land Of Retinal Delights opens...

In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor opened last night to a star studded crowd. A who's who of the current art scene for sure. The private opening reception went down last night and the exhibition opens to the public today, June 22 and will run through October 5, 2008.

The exhibition features the artistry of Mark Ryden, Jeff Soto, Tim Biskup, Tiffany Bozic, Raymond Pettibone, Craig Stecyk, Marion Peck, Von Dutch, Robert Williams, Peter Joel Witkin, Camille Rose Garcia, Eric White, and well over a hundred more plus a simply amazing installation in the lower level from Kevin Ancel that has to be seen in person. The opening night reception also served as the premiere of Todd Schoor's latest masterpiece that he created as a commission for Nike head Mark Parker. It's MASSIVE and features a frame created by a Hollywood prop house that really is a work of art by itself.

Looking forward to seeing the show again, as there were so many folks out to talk to and catch up with, it made it hard to really take in all the art as I would have liked. We also had to rush out a bit earlier than we wanted, as we had tix to the opening of the David Choe move "Dirty Hands" (which, was AMAZING - see it!!!). Luckily I had a chance to congratulate curator Meg Linton on the show before we had to leave and she mentioned there would be other events going down throughout the exhibiton's run at the museum, so be sure to keep an eye out for those.

The setting of the museum itself is just amazing. They are located less than a block from the ocean and Laguna is already a major art destination in and of itself being home to the Pagent Of The Masters and a thriving arts community, so be sure to make a weekend out of it and hit this exhibit before it's too late, and take in some of the other beautiful sites that Laguna has to offer. It's about 50 miles outside of LA, but so worth the drive.

The exhibition catalog (now available for pre-order) is being laid out by the one and only Mark Murphy of Murphy Design. Mark also designed all the invites and other materials associated with the event.

For hours and more info, visit the museum at:

Know Hope in town from Israel...

Know Hope is in town from Israel and is just killing it. You may have noticed some of his beautiful wheat pastes up about the LaBrea/Melrose area in the past week (see below) or perhaps been lucky enough to see one of his street lamp installs before someone ran off with 'em... either way, his show this Sat at Carmichael alongside Asbestos, Cherri Wood, The Dark and Kngee is one not to miss. KH and the Carmichael crew have transformed the back gallery into something that really needs to be seen in person. The beauty above is our latest addition.

Joshua Clay solo nears...

Joshua Clay's 2nd solo show with our gallery is getting near... sneak previews will be posted as we head into the show at:

Joshua is pictured above in front of the mural he did recently in London with KMNDZ, Ekundayo and Mike Maxwell. The full mural is actually featured as the inside front and back inside color spreads of the new 'London Street Art 2' book issued by Prestel. It lasted all of a day, before some street art pirates came and snapped it up off the streets... considering the sheer size of this massive mural, it must have been a very planned out attack.

Watch for more sneak peaks to be posted soon.

Flavorpill, BoingBoing, VinylPulse & more preview Karmic Magic...

Check out early advance coverage on Amy Sol's "Karmic Magic" at:

And we posted a bunch of new sneak peak shots on our flickr of Amy working on her amazing installation as well as pics of her signing the prints and more (see above).

"Karmic Magic, Las Vegas artist Amy Sol's solo show with the Silverlake gem Thinkspace, features doe-eyed females, furry creatures, and sweetly whimsical, abstract narratives. Her graphically stylized, flattened-space compositions have a dreamlike quality, as her heroines are often caught frozen in contemplation of their surreal surroundings: carousels floating in wet skies, allegorical menageries, and windswept vistas. In their fantastical flora-and-fauna environments, Sol's damsels relish in private moments, perhaps waiting for some type of resolution to inscrutable inner quandaries." - FLAVORPILL.NET

"Sol’s paintings are like willfully obscure abstract fables in which she pairs images that she likes with personal ideas about the characters she creates. This visual vocabulary is the backbone to Sol's unique brand of storytelling, which she refers to as 'muted allegories'." - JUXTAPOZ.COM

The UK's Will Barras debuted his 1st LA solo...

The UK's Will Barras debuted his 1st LA solo show tonight at The Carmichael Gallery on LaBrea... be sure to roll through and check it out before it comes down, he did a great job and his brush strokes are just filled with so much energy. Two killer onsite mural installations as well (see above). He's an artist's artist for sure. In the past couple years he's been causing a pretty massive buzz over in the UK and is also a part of the well known Scrawl Collective. You'll be hearing much more from him in the future, including a feature in a future issue of Juxtapoz (and he's on the cover of the new issue of Modart - Europe's answer to Juxtapoz).

Check out a killer video of Will here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTTQKdKi_qI

Brandi Milne making a big impact in LA over the next couple weeks...

Brandi Milne just rocked Corey Helford Gallery a few months back... now she's storming LA with a vengeance over the coming weeks.

The madness started this evening with her participation in the big "Design For Humanity" Surfrider Benefit art show that Billabong held out at the Avalon in Hollywood... then... she rocks Gallery 2 at Copro Nason this Saturday, June 7th with her 2nd LA solo show and then next weekend, Friday June 13th, she has her big kids book release from Baby Tattoo over at Gallery 1988 over on Melrose, complete with art from the book on display to purchase.

Oh yeah... and she's got a couple shirt designs about to drop from Hurley too.

When does she sleep? We hope not anytime soon.. as after all this, she'll start getting ready for her big solo with us next April. Can't wait!!! Brandi is just killin' it right now!

Check out her site for all the details on the above: http://www.brandimilne.com/

Niagara invades LA this SAT (one-night only)...

Billy Shire and BSFA have partnered with VANS to debut Niagara's new line with a special exhibition of over 30 original works this Saturday, June 7th, 7-9pm.

The gallery will be open on Saturday, June 7 from 12-6pm, with the general public opening from 7-9pm. No RSVP is required to attend on Saturday. Minors must be accompanied by an adult since drinks will be served. Great chance to see a huge body of work from one of our scene's longest standing and most respected artists.

David Choe movie set to have LA premiere June 21st...

Harry Kim’s highly anticipated documentary on street art’s favorite badass, David Choe, finally debuts Saturday, June 21st as part of the Los Angeles Film Fest at Majestic Crest Theatre.

Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe chronicles the life of this renegade artist’s triumphs, struggles, and self-described “bullshit life.” Los Angeles artist David Choe's kaleidoscopic work can be playful, confrontational and sexually frank. His personal life is no less complicated, as revealed by close friend Harry Kim, who documented Choe's life and crimes from 2000 to 2007. From the manic highs of commercial success and dinosaur hunting in the Congo to the self-destructive lows of Japanese jail sentences and bouts of self-doubt and depression, what begins as a gleeful portrait of a bad-boy artist slowly becomes a poignant celebration of one man's journey, both artistically and spiritually, toward his own uncertain salvation.

Pictured above is one of our gems from Choe that we got from his last show at Gallery AD up in San Jose - "Party Hats and Double Dongs". How can't you love it with a name like that?!?!

To view the trailer go here.

Vimby post video of Fifty24LA/UP opening...

Get on down to 6th Street and check out the new show and the stunning front window installation from European street artist Armsrock. As I've been mentioning a good bit, get ready for his big show this December at thinkspace with NY street artist Elbow-Toe. Their show about to open next week at Ad Hoc Art in Brookyln, NY is almost sold out already. We've a few nice ones from Armsrock and Elbow-Toe in our 'Available Artwork' section... check 'em out. More to come soon from both.

Don't miss Tiffany Bozic's new show...

Don't miss SF based artist Tiffany Bozic's latest solo show "Bedtime Stories" at Kinsey/DesForges over in Culver City. The gem above, "Namibia", is the latest piece to join the Hosner Art Collection. There were only a couple of paintings left last I saw. She just gets tighter and tighter with each show. The show is up through June 28th, so be sure to swing on over to Culver City.

In this latest series, Bozic applies her trademark stains of acrylic washes to the natural grain of maple panel to render resonant stories based on observations in her travels and research while an artist in residence at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, where she helped establish their new Artist in Residence Program and exhibited in 2007.

Some really great shows are on view over in Culver City right now including Murakami at Blum&Poe, Joshua Krause at Cerasoli Gallery, and many more plus Scion has a new one opening this Saturday too... so more than enough reasons to head out to CC (assuming you didn't swim up stream with the masses last weekend when it was 'hip' to be there).

Amy Sol sneak peak #2...

We're happy to share the 2nd full sneak peak of a piece from "Karmic Magic" - look for details to follow on the release of her print in the coming days. We will be open early for the print sale, so watch for times and further details soon. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list if you haven't already to get the news 1st.

Poets Of The Paste @ AdHoc...

If you are in NYC next weekend... DO NOT MISS "Poets Of The Paste" at AdHocArt out in Brooklyn.

The amazing Armsrock (who also has a sweet show currently on display at FIFTY24SF with D*Face that everyone should check out!) will be featured alongside fellow legends ELBOW-TOE, Gaia, and Imminent Disaster in a four-person show fittingly named Poets of the Paste. Opening Friday, June 13th at Ad Hoc Art, Poets of the Paste will unite these four figurative artists known for their striking images that comment on nature, contemporary society and the everyday lives we live. These artists transform public spaces to moments of private reflection with an emphasis on careful craftsmanship.

Armsrock, ELBOW-TOE, Gaia, and Imminent Disaster have left their marks on the urban landscapes, generously giving their talent to the public, time, and the elements. Now they bring their skills together at Ad Hoc through drawings, stencils, paintings, and block prints incorporated onto various media. For more on the show check out http://www.adhocart.org/.

To check out more on Armsrock: http://www.armsrock.blogspot.com/ (some amazing shots of his recent trip up to SF... just killed it up there)

For more on Elbow-Toe: http://www.flickr.com/photos/guy_on_the_streets/

For more on Gaia: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pisacane/

And for Imminent Disaster: http://www.flickr.com/photos/disasterstrikes/

Get familiar with these names. They all have VERY bright futures ahead of them and Elbow-Toe and Armsrock will be taking over our gallery this December and we just can't wait. Past that, both Gaia and Imminent Disaster will be invading in early 2008 as part of a special show that AdHocArt will be curating at our space... more on that huge show very soon.

LA auction weekend...

Los Angeles was host to a couple of very nice contemporary art auctions this past weekend. 1st up was the big SCION auction for their recent traveling exhibit "Installation 4" that hit a host of cities including a stop at last year's Art Basel in Miami, FL. Somewhat of a mellow turnout, and some great deals to be had. The above Soto only went for about $3,500 - a steal. One of the surprises of the show saw the nail bat from Sage Vaughn going for $4,000. Having one of these in our own collection, I have to admit I was super stoked to see that action. Word is one of Sage's paintings went for a huge sum at a recent UK auction and that's got the collectors out in a big way searching out his work. During the Auction Freddi C and I were commenting on how many folks had been contacting each of us in the past few weeks for Sage's work - out of the blue really, so the big auction impact explains all that. He's an amazing talent, so glad to see things taking off for him.
We got in on the action as well and picked up an awesome sculpture from Canadian artist Andrew Pommier (see below). This is our third piece from Andrew and by far our favorite from him. Stands a lil' over 3' tall in person.
Next up was the big Santa Monica Art Auction held over at the Bergamot Station art center. Not a huge turnout for this one either as evidenced by the photos below, but folks were buying, that's for sure. Sadly neither of the amazing Banksy works in the auction met their minimums, which had some commenting... but both works were amazing and had it been a bigger auction and marketed to that scene a bit more, I'm sure both would have had heads turnin'. Regardless, some amazing works from everyone from Warhol to Pettibon to Rushca and more were on view.
One lucky phone-in / on-line bidder got a simply amazing two panel work on canvas from Barry Mc Gee that must have measured over 10' long by 6' high combined for only $7,500 - insane!!! The below Barry McGee piece (a diptych) didn't get its minimum bid of only $9K... a steal for such a huge Barry street piece from back in the day.
All in all a fun day out and we came home with a killer new piece, and all we intended to do was check 'em both out. If you've never been, be sure to check out the next auction over at Bergamot... nice chill atmosphere and it's outside. You can't beat that.
